Website Support Retainers: What to Include and How Agencies Should Price Them

Support retainers are one of the more underrated parts of an agency’s business model. Done well, they turn what would otherwise be a stream of unpredictable, hard-to-price one-off requests into predictable recurring revenue, while giving clients the reassurance that someone is actually looking after their site.

What a Good Retainer Typically Includes

Core maintenance

At minimum, most retainers should cover core updates, plugin and theme updates, security monitoring, and backups. This is the baseline that keeps a site running safely, and it’s the easiest part of a retainer to justify to a client, since the alternative (an unmaintained, unpatched site) is a real business risk.

A defined pool of development hours

Beyond maintenance, most retainers include a set number of hours per month for small development tasks: content updates, minor design tweaks, bug fixes, or small feature additions. Being specific about what counts as “small” avoids scope disagreements later.

Priority support and response times

Clients on a retainer generally expect faster turnaround on issues than a one-off client would get, and it’s worth being explicit about what response time is actually being promised, rather than leaving it implied.

Reporting

A short monthly or quarterly summary of what was done, uptime, and any issues found, helps clients see the value of the retainer rather than wondering what they’re paying for. This is a simple thing to include that meaningfully improves retention.

How to Price It

Retainer pricing usually works best as a tiered structure: a lower tier covering just maintenance and security, and higher tiers adding more development hours and faster response times. Pricing purely on hours can undersell the ongoing value of monitoring and peace of mind, so it’s worth pricing the base maintenance layer as its own line item rather than folding everything into an hourly rate.

Where Agencies Get Retainers Wrong

The most common mistake is under-scoping what’s included, then absorbing scope creep for free to keep the client happy. This erodes the margin on retainers quickly. Being specific upfront about what counts as included maintenance versus billable extra work protects the retainer’s profitability long term.
