When Does a Client Brief Need Laravel Instead of WordPress or Shopify?

The Wrong Question Agencies Often Ask

The question usually asked is “can WordPress do this?” and the honest answer is almost always yes, with enough plugins and custom development. That’s not a useful question, because it will eventually justify forcing a custom application’s worth of logic into a CMS that wasn’t built for it.

The better question is whether the brief is fundamentally content-driven, storefront-driven, or logic-driven. That distinction is what actually determines the right platform, and it’s worth getting right before scoping a project, because switching platforms halfway through a build is expensive for everyone.

When WordPress Is the Right Call

WordPress remains the right choice when the core of the site is content: pages, blog posts, a straightforward contact process, and a client who needs to manage that content themselves without technical help. This covers the large majority of marketing sites, brochure sites, and even fairly complex sites with custom post types, provided the “complexity” is still fundamentally about structuring and displaying content rather than processing business logic.

A well-built WordPress site with Gutenberg blocks and custom post types can handle more than agencies sometimes give it credit for. The failure mode isn’t WordPress being too limited, it’s using WordPress for something that was never a content management problem in the first place.

When Shopify Is the Right Call

Shopify is the right choice when the brief is fundamentally about selling physical or digital products online, and the client’s needs sit within (or close to) what Shopify and its app ecosystem already handle well: product catalogues, checkout, payment processing, inventory, and standard ecommerce reporting.

Where Shopify starts to strain is heavily bespoke logic that doesn’t map to a standard ecommerce flow, such as complex configurators, non-standard pricing rules that change based on business logic rather than simple discounts, or workflows that need to interact with multiple internal systems in real time.

When the Brief Actually Needs Laravel

A brief needs a custom Laravel application when the core requirement is business logic rather than content or a storefront. Signs that point toward this include a client portal where users log in to view account-specific data or take actions that trigger downstream processes, a workflow involving multiple user roles with different permissions and views, real-time or complex data processing that doesn’t fit a plugin’s assumptions about how data should be structured, and integrations with multiple systems where the “glue” logic between them is the actual product, not an afterthought.

SaaS platforms, booking and scheduling systems with non-standard rules, internal tools built for a client’s own team rather than their end customers, and multi-tenant applications all tend to fall here.

The Cost of Getting This Wrong

Forcing a Laravel-shaped problem into WordPress usually means a growing stack of custom plugins that become harder to maintain and update, brittle workarounds that break with WordPress core or plugin updates, and a client left with a “CMS” that no longer behaves predictably. The inverse mistake, building a simple content site as a custom Laravel application, means paying custom development rates and timelines for something a CMS would have handled at a fraction of the cost.
